Passage: Matthew 5:1–16

HOME GROUP DISCUSSION

- In verse 13 of Matthew 5, Jesus calls his followers the salt of the earth. What do you think he meant by this illustration? For us as followers of Christ, what is the difference between being relevant to our world and being distinct from our world? Which does Jesus seem to want us to be?

- In verse 14 of Matthew 5, Jesus calls his followers the light of the world. What does light represent throughout the old and new testaments? What does using the illustration of "a city" impy? What are some examples of being the light of the world as individuals? What are some examples of being the light of the world as a church?

- How do people see God's glory in your good works? (Hint: Kyle used an example of windows that are tinted or clear....)

- What does a life that displays the beattitudes (verses 3-12) result in (verse 16)? How does our coming hope (verses 3-12) free us to live this way? Are you going to live this way?
