Passage: 1 Thessalonians 1:9–10

SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION

- In 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10, we get a picture of what true conversion - what becoming a true follower of Christ - looks like. How can "turning" be a description of becoming a follower of Jesus? (hint: Acts 3:18-19) What did the believers in the church in Thessalonica turn from?

- What is idolatry? Where does it come from? What are some kinds of things that can be idols in our lives today? If we find we are struggling with idols in our lives - or we see those aournd us struggling with them - what can we do about it?

- If we are to turn away from idols, what are we turning to? Read Romans 6:12-13 and Romans 6:17-18. How do these verses help us think about what it means to truly follow Jesus?

- In 1 Thessalonians 1:10, what does it mean to wait for God's Son? Some verses to read and discuss: Romans 8:23; Hebrews 9:27-28; 2 Timothy 4:8; Titus 2:11-14; 2 Peter 3:11-13.
